Capturing a Likeness by capyBAKA Capturing a Likeness by capyBAKA
Just something I knocked up thinking it might be useful. I know its something I used to struggle with

This tutorial is about capturing a likeness and personality rather than a photorealistic copy.
Associate those adjectives!

Feel free to ask any questions you may have about this process or where to go from here

Even the enlarged view is hard to read. I wish you'd post a larger version to download.

The full size here is over 1000px wide, what resolution screen are you viewing this on? It's more than legible on my end.

1000 px?----H-m-m-m-m. Deviantart MAY have changed things a little. Used to be, I could get the large view simply by right-clicking to "view image". This usually resulted in the TOTAL large view. Now that I double-check, I see that is NOT the case here. The result I get by doing that is under 500px wide, which renders your small type at about 7 pt or less.

I'm looking right now at the full version the proper way, which is rendering your text at more like 14pt.

(My bad) :/

Oh dear God, thank you for this.
I have been trying to draw Avenger's Loki for so long, and I have failed miserably each time. My friends cannot comprehend how much difficulty I have with drawing this one man.
But your tutorial really helped/is helping. I never really thought to look at the defining features of his face.
You're fucking amazing.

I quite like this tutorial. I've seen enough of the basic-face-anatomy ones that I finally get how to construct a basic face, but capturing certain features and likenesses is something I still can't do. I like how you simplify it. I also like that you're not showing how get the same exact image, but to stylize and get the basic shapes and such.

It's a science as much as it is an art :D that's what I love about drawing a likeness.

Basically 100% the same as my own formula. Glad to see I'm not the only one who traces to simplify...
I usually make some additional markings to note where the cheekbones lie etc.

I find the best thing to do is to put the way the person's features look in front of how you draw that particular feature by default. It took me a while to get this through my thick skull though XD

Thank you for this tutorial. When I draw different people's faces, they all end up looking alike, like clones. This tut should help me overcome that problem.

Before you have to draw someone next, try writing a description of their features first- it should help to stick in your mind what's important to get a good likeness :)
Hope it can help you!
